Starting 1997-98 off in a midfield role for Aston Villa, playing behind Savo Milosevic and Stan Collymore, mainly to accommodate the latter, Dwight looked rather uncomfortable for a while and took some time to settle down. Despite him describing his season as "so,so", especially during the time when he had a lean spell in terms of goals, and was out of action for a number of games due to a calf operation, on his day he still looked an exciting player who used his pace to advantage when running at defenders. A natural athlete with great balance and a lovely left foot, he continued to pick up goals, 16 in league and cup games making him Villa's leading scorer, several of them vital to the cause. Among them were winners at Derby and Southampton, and at Villa Park against Leeds and Arsenal, to go with braces at Everton and Coventry, and seven goals in the last seven games went a long way towards pushing the club from 11th in the table to a respectable seventh. Continued to play for Trinidad and Tobago. |
