| Phillip, younger brother of Gary,
looks to have a great future ahead of him with Manchester
United. Captain of the 1995 Manchester United Youth Cup winning squad, he is aiming to make the right back berth at Manchester United his own. He was called up to the England squad when just 19 years of age, and was a squad member for England in Euro 96. Phillip had a phenomenal season in 1995-96, establishing himself at right-back, and helping United to the 'double'. Having seemingly become United's number one right back, Phil's 96/97 season was punctuated by injuries and illness, and his older brother Gary claimed the place as his own. However, Phil is equally happy on the other flank, and it is now Dennis Irwin looking over his shoulder at Phil. Phil is now a regular in the England squad and had amassed 6 caps before the start of the 97/98 season. Alex Ferguson started to utilise Phil's talents in midfield in January, and he managed to break his scoring duck at Chelsea in February, the decisive goal in the game. |
