NEVILLE KNOWS UNITED CAN COMPLETE TREBLE DREAMPhil Neville believes Manchester United can win the dream treble of European Cup, FA Carling Premiership and FA Cup. The odds on United becoming the first club to achieve this unique feat are falling with each game. Alex Ferguson's side are four points clear at the top of the Premier League, are in the FA Cup semi-finals and have one foot in the last four of the Champions' League following their 2-0 first leg quarter-final success over Inter Milan. Liverpool came closest to winning the treble only to fall one game short in 1977 when they lost the FA Cup Final to Tommy Docherty's United. United defender Neville is adamant they can go one step better and rewrite the football history books. ``People say it's an impossible dream to win the treble, but for every game we win, the chance we have of getting all three trophies becomes greater,'' he said. ``At the moment we're on top of the league, we're in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and we're in the driving seat in Europe as well. ``There's everything to play for and we will be going for it on all three fronts.'' Publicly at least, Ferguson is not so bullish about United's prospects. He maintains it would require a miracle to win the three top prizes in club football. ``I don't think it's an issue for us and we will just concentrate on what we're doing,'' he said. Instead of trebles, Ferguson's mind is focused simply on beating old rivals Newcastle at St James' Park tomorrow. Magpies boss Ruud Gullit is finally beginning to improve the club's fortunes and has guided them to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Ferguson claims United face a testing trip to Tyneside. ``They've done well recently and it's going to be a hard game,'' he said. ``But then it's always a hard game up there anyway no matter when you go. ``It's always a passionate game and we're looking forward to it.'' Newcastle striker Alan Shearer will be aiming to score his 150th Premiership goal against United and the game could mark the return to league action for his England partner Teddy Sheringham. Sheringham, who came on as a substitute against Chelsea on Sunday, is in the squad following his full recovery from a knee problem. The former Tottenham striker has started just six games for United this season and Ferguson is pleased to have him back for their potentially historic run-in. Ferguson said: ``He's been unfortunate this year - no question about that. ``But he's back now and he's fit. He played for the reserves on Wednesday and scored a goal and he's come back at a good time for us. ``The only gauge I can go by is his training and he's trained well and he looks good.'' Ronny Johnsen has recovered from his hamstring injury to take his place in the squad, although Nicky Butt is still missing because of a hip problem. |
