| David May spent his first
two seasons trying to prove to the Manchester public that
he is worthy of wearing the red shirt of United. Played out of position, in his early United days, he made many mistakes, and with injuries disrupting his progression, he languished in the United reserves, unable to break up the formidable partnership of Bruce and Pallister. But, in the 1995-96 season Bruce and Pallister both suffered from injuries and May got his chance, and grabbed it with both hands. He performed brilliantly in the centre of defence and even scored the important opening goal in the last fixture of the Premiership season at Middlesbrough. David May started the 96/97 season as Gary Pallister's partner, and his performances were his best since arriving at Old Trafford. The United fans even made up a new ditty for the player, "David May, Superstar, He's got more medals than Shearer!". His performances did not go unnoticed by Glenn Hoddle, and he was called up to the national squad for the friendly against Mexico in March. David scored four goals in all competitions, his most important being the first goal in the four goal rout of Porto in the Champions League. |
