| Another
member of Fergie's Fledglings, Nicky Butt was
brought into the side to fill the gap left by
Paul Ince's move to Inter Milan. An England
under-21 midfielder, he was a member of club's
1992 FA Youth Cup-winning side and England's
Under-19 World Cup squad in Australia, March
1993. Butt was one of the
few successes of United's 1994-95 Champions
League campaign, gaining valuable experience
against Barcelona and Gotenburg, where he made
his full debut. His outstanding performances for
United in Europe ensured that he received a
call-up to the England under-21 side on the back
of that performance.
A consistent performer in the
'double' season of 1995-96, playing along side
Roy Keane in the heart of United's midfield.
Nicky's United career went from
strength to strength in 96/97, now an established
member of the United midfield, Butt continued to
put in workhorse-like performances whilst also
improving his goal ratio in the Premiership. He
collected another Championship medal, and now has
a very impressive medal haul for a 22 year old.
He was elavated to the full
England squad in March 1997, and appeared as a
substitute in the last two of England's World Cup
qualifying games, against Moldova and Italy.
