An excellent Manchester United midfielder with a wonderful range of passing and shooting skills, David was straining at the leash at the start of last season, when Alex Ferguson gave him enough time to recover from his exertions for England at the end of the previous campaign. Quick to prove that you cannot hold a good player down for long, he scored United's winner as a substitute against Southampton, in their second Premiership game of the season, and added a further strike against Everton, two games later.

Although the Old Trafford faithful had to wait until November before he found the net again, scoring two against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, his next contributions were among his finest of the campaign. Always a danger at set plays, he scored an absolute "cracker" against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premiership, then helped to put Chelsea out of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge in January.

Although every aspect of his life continues to dominate the headlines - notably his engagement to "Posh Spice," Victoria Adams - his form continues to earn rave notice, both on the domestic and international scene, and it came as no surprise when he was named as one of Glenn Hoddle's England squad for the World Cup Finals during the summer. Was also recognised by his fellow professionals when selected for the award-winning PFA Premiership side.

Stop Press: Thought by many to be a player who would grace the World Cup stage, he failed to make an appearance in the first match, came on for Paul Ince against Romania, started and scored a wonderful free kick in the 2-0 win over Colombia, before being sent off against Argentine and effectively limiting England's chances of victory. One of England's greatest creative talents, he must be encouraged to walk away from provocation.
